the history of macrame
Macrame is a decoration art based on knots. Its history dates back to the Arab countries around the 13th century. After all, the name macrame is most likely derived from the word “migramah” which means decorative fringe.
Traveling across the continent from the deserts of the Middle East to cities near Asia and Africa, the Arabs managed to spread the art of macrame. In Europe it began to spread after the conquest of Spain by the Moors. The Moorish conquest took the craft to Spain, then Italy, especially in the region of Liguria, then it spread through Europe. In England, it was introduced at the court of Mary II in the late 17th century. Queen Mary taught it to her ladies-in-waiting.
Macrame reached its zenith during the Victorian era, until it returned to the 1960s, 1970s with the hippie movement in America. Since then, it continues to evolve and is popular in many uses, from elaborate jewelry, clothing and handbags to curtains, pillow cases and wall decorations.
